Renovation Vs. Replacement of Older and Historic Schools

When school districts want to improve their facilities they often face an immediate question: “Is it better to renovate the schools we have, or should they be replaced?” This podcast will help school administrators understand the process by which they can answer that question.
There is a growing body of evidence that older and historic schools can often be renovated at no more, and often less cost than new schools, when all the costs are figured into the equation. Communities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries built schools as monuments to the civic value of education—often massive masonry structures with marble, mahogany, and slate finishes. These types of buildings offer solid value in their basic form and structure.
Older and historic schools also often contain amenities and architectural character unaffordable in replacement schools today. Some schools, however, were built cheaply to handle sudden booms in student populations and have now thoroughly expended their useful life.
The process outlined in the podcast is intended to yield an objective analysis of the choice between renovation and replacement.

Strategic Planning for Educational Facilities

For years, school officials have fit programs into spaces, rather than designing spaces to fit desired programs. When planning new or renovated spaces, the first step in the planning process should be structured conversation that revolves around desired programs and learning results. During this presentation, Mr. Godkin will introduce a model to generate discussions and develop beliefs that will ensure learning drives construction. Participants will begin to develop an understanding of how to build a strategic planning task force (task force), identify information to challenge the task force and identify current vital signs. Additionally, they will understand the need for open-ended questions that will guide the task force development of beliefs and commitments surround facilities and learning. Facilities and instructional leaders are encouraged to participate in this session together to learn how to engage with local task force to identify learning beliefs and decide how facilities will help accomplish them.
Advancements in Practice: A Principal's Story

There is a perceived gap in knowledge regarding facilities design/construction and how this may influence the approach to emergency management practices in educational institutions. Considerations such as age of facility, materials of construction, measures of mitigation, and staff development are all factors in matters to emergency practice. This presentation is intended to provide a brief, yet effective, message for key personnel considering how they might approach staff development and exercise design to support mitigation, prevention, response and recovery from significant events.

Our schools work diligently to provide educational services for students who face a wide range of challenges, such as those involving mobility, cognitive processing, vision, and the ability to hear. There is no one school design that is right for all children and all communities. If there were, school design would be a simple process. Sustainable Design of Learning Environments

Using the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden's new LEED Platinum Education Center as a case study, this session will discuss the green building process with an emphasis on the early design charrette as an integral tool for achieving the highest possible LEED rating and the Net Zero energy target. New educational tools being used by the Gardens will be presented which allows visitors and building users to track performance and to learn about the building's green features. Cost benefit analysis will be discussed and the expected payback on this Net Zero solar-powered building will be showcased.

In light of the recent tragedy in Japan, earthquake preparedness for educational facilities has gained great attention. In this course, educational leaders will learn about how they can prepare and protect their most valuable resources in the event of an earthquake. Participants will learn a basic set of actions to take before, during, and after earthquakes, according to the Seven Steps to School Seismic Safety, adapted from the Seven Step to Earthquake Safety as included in many earthquake publications for the general public and for businesses across the country.
